Two million bottles of wines and spirit were destroyed by a fire that raged through part of the 15,000 m2 storage facility of Bordeaux negociant, Sovex Grands Châteaux on Tuesday, 16 April. Founded in 1982, and with over 80 employees, the company normally holds stock worth €65m, including substantial volumes of Cru Classé Bordeaux.

The 40 firefighters who brought the blaze under control were hampered by the fact that the bottles were stored on flammable wooden pallets or in wooden cases. A video filmed by one of the employees shows the ceiling collapsing on piles of cases that were up to 10 metres in height.

Experts are considering the extent of the damage the smoke and heat may have caused to the stock that escaped the flames.
